Turn right on South Shore Road and cross the pedestrian suspension bridge into the historic hamlet of Wanakena. Note that snacks, coffee and cold drinks, are available at Otto's Abode - check out the latest art exhibition inside or make yourself at home on the front porch. Also note that an enjoyable, self-guided walking tour of Wanakena begins just across from the Abode and post office. From suspension bridge, continue north towards Route 3.  Make a right onto Ranger School Rd, which follows the river as it flows towards Cranberry Lake. On your way down Ranger School Road you will come across the Pine Cone Bar and Grill. Upon arriving at the SUNY-ESF Ranger School, continue in front of the school and past the canoe racks next to the river. Just past the canoes a marked trail enters the forest to the right and soon merges with the DEC Peavine Swamp ski and bike trail.
